Cromwell Farmstays and Getaways

Unique accommodation in the Byron Bay hinterland.

The Cromwell family farming roots go back many generations on both sides of our families, here in Australia and in Canada. Today, with the help of our daughters, Aubrey, Morley, and Bella, we manage 40 acres in the Byron Bay Hinterland using regenerative practices with a focus on unique farm stays and pasture-raised, rare heritage breeds. Our family strives to bring joy and sustainability to regenerative farming.

Our working family farm in Goonengerry offers visitors many wholesome experiences including hand-picking your own produce, interacting with our farm animals, exploring the land and buildings and of course, overnight stays.

We also offer homely getaways in the Clarence Valley - in Wooli, Ulmarra and Glenugie. Head to our website to view all our accommodation options!

Distinguished and Famous people from Warringah Region

🏄 Duke Kahanamoku

Hawaiian swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku visited Freshwater during the summer of 1914–15, giving demonstrations that became landmarks in Australian surfing history. He stayed at the Boomerang holiday camp, and photographs preserved in the council collection record that visit. His role was that of an influential visitor, bringing Hawaiian board-riding skills to an enthusiastic local audience. The demonstrations helped popularise Hawaiian-style board riding among local beachgoers. A short stay helped change the way generations would use the beach.

🌊 Isabel Letham

Isabel Letham was fifteen when she rode tandem with Duke Kahanamoku at Freshwater in January 1915. Her later recollection included considerable alarm before the celebrated ride, a useful reminder that an iconic sporting moment can begin with someone wishing to stay put. She subsequently taught swimming in California and became San Francisco’s director of swimming in 1924. Returning to Australia in 1929, she taught for many years at Freshwater and Manly and helped introduce water ballet. The famous wave was therefore an opening scene in a much longer contribution to confidence and skill in the water.

🏛️ Tony Abbott

Tony Abbott entered federal parliament through a Warringah by-election in 1994 and held the seat for twenty-five years. Ministerial roles and leadership of the opposition preceded his term as Australia's prime minister from 2013 to 2015. He remained the local member after losing the Liberal leadership, until independent Zali Steggall won the seat in 2019. His association is a long period of parliamentary representation, distinct from a claim of local birth. The electorate provided the political base from which he developed a national career and to which he remained accountable through successive elections.

🕊️ Paul Couvret

Paul Couvret moved to Belrose in 1966 and became involved in school, youth, veterans' and Rotary activities. He later served on Warringah council from 1973 to 1995, including a term as shire president. Earlier, as a Dutch serviceman, he had survived Japanese captivity and the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. His subsequent civic work included support for the Oxford Falls Peace Park. That life joined experiences of wartime destruction with decades of teaching and community service in Australia, giving the district a substantial personal story behind the name of a former council leader.
